Early Interceptive Orthodonticsin Delaware County & New Castle County
At Stoutland Orthodontics, we help guide your child’s smile early—before big problems start—so they can grow with confidence and comfort.

What is early interceptive orthodontics?
Early interceptive orthodontics is a preventive approach that identifies and addresses potential orthodontic issues before they fully develop—usually between the ages of 7 and 10. At this stage, your child still has a mix of baby and adult teeth, and their jaw is still growing. By catching concerns early, we can use growth to our advantage, making future treatment simpler and often shorter. At Stoutland Orthodontics, Dr. Stoutland uses her years of experience and warm, personalized approach to help every child feel safe, confident, and set up for success.

The benefits of early interceptive orthodontics
Early intervention can reduce the complexity and cost of future treatment.
Space maintenance
When baby teeth are lost too early, the surrounding teeth can shift into that space and create problems for permanent teeth trying to come in later. Space maintainers help preserve the proper spacing in a child’s smile, guiding healthy development and reducing the risk of more complex orthodontic issues down the road. At Stoutland Orthodontics, these appliances are carefully planned and customized to support proper growth while keeping young patients comfortable.

Palatal expansion
Palatal expansion is used when a child’s upper jaw is too narrow, which can affect bite alignment, breathing, and how permanent teeth erupt. Using a custom appliance, the upper jaw is gently widened over time to create more room and encourage balanced development. Many of our expanders are digitally designed and 3D printed for a precise, comfortable fit, making treatment more efficient and predictable.

Limited braces
In some cases, a child may benefit from limited braces to address specific alignment issues early, rather than waiting for full orthodontic treatment later on. Limited braces focus on correcting targeted concerns during key growth phases, helping guide teeth into better positions and potentially shortening or simplifying future treatment. This approach allows us to be proactive while keeping care conservative and age-appropriate.
We’ll always take the time to evaluate your child’s growth and explain whether early orthodontic treatment is recommended, so you can feel confident you’re making the right decision at the right time.

Frequently asked questions
Not sure if your child needs early orthodontic care? We’ve got answers.
We offer free consultations (including records), so there’s no cost to come in and see if your child could benefit from early treatment. If Phase 1 care is recommended, we’ll walk you through the cost upfront. We offer in-house payment plans to suit your budget. Our team will work with you to make care accessible and stress-free.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Early interceptive treatment can guide jaw growth, improve spacing, and prevent more serious problems—but it doesn’t always eliminate the need for Phase 2 braces later on. However, when Phase 2 is needed, it’s often shorter, simpler, and more comfortable because we’ve already addressed the foundational issues.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist by age 7. At this age, an orthodontist can spot subtle issues with jaw growth, bite alignment, and emerging teeth—even if your child’s smile looks fine to the untrained eye. Early evaluations don’t always lead to immediate treatment, but they allow us to monitor development and act at the right time if needed.
